alcoholism addictionAlcoholism is a major concern globally. Millions of people are addicted to it and have no intention on stopping anytime soon. In fact, every year more people join the population of alcoholics and less people are showing up for their group meetings or in rehab to try and break the cycle of addiction.

As a whole 23 million people are addicted to some sort of substance and about 18 million of them are addicted to alcohol. More than 43 percent of our population lives with a family member who is addicted to alcohol. It is a serious condition and what a lot of people misunderstand or do not want to conceive is that it is in fact a condition. There is medication available that can treat victims of alcoholism who are ready to stop their addiction and move onward with an improved, healthier life.

Alcohol can and does hurt millions of people and most of the time it’s not the person who is drinking it that gets hurt. Accidents happen every day and most of them are caused by people who have chosen to drink and drive. As an alcoholic it may not become a choice to drink but it does become one to drive and it is a choice not to get help.

Too much alcohol can lead to death but not before one has suffered some damage such as heart disease, liver disease, various other diseases, cancer, poor circulation, poor diet, sexual function damage, irregular heartbeat, and damage to brain cells which eventually leads to brain damage.

That is only the physical side. Alcoholism also hurts emotionally because if you have a family they are not likely to stay around for someone who chose alcohol over them. Alcohol is a choice, it’s not a necessity. By giving into an alcohol craving you are choosing it, choose rehab, and choose your family.
