addictsAddicts are all around us and die every year due to their addiction. In fact, 25 percent of Americans die due to substance abuse every single year. Nearly 10 million of that percentage is addicted to prescription drugs, another 10 million are addicted to alcohol while another fifty million Americans are addicted to smoking.

An astounding ninety-five percent of addicts die without ever receiving any kind of treatment and for some people they die without truly knowing how to. Others are too prideful and think that they can do it on their own all the way up until the day that they pass away from the very thing they couldn’t stop using.

Addiction is not a sign of weakness, it is a disease as serious as cancer is and it affects families just as cancer does. You watch your loved one go down a road that you cannot understand, cannot follow and cannot literally reach down and pull them out of. The same thing happens with cancer, your loved one is experiencing something you may never experience. You cannot fully understand because you have never been there. A disease tries to conquer the body and most of the time, it wins. However, there are those who can beat it.

Addicts come in different sizes, shapes, races, and ages and no one is better than anyone else where addiction is concerned because those addicted to shopping or sex are in the same boat as those addicted to alcohol or drugs. Addiction as a whole kills people, tortures people and rips families apart and everyone who has an addiction should find help where they can get it. If you do not know how, ask someone. If you have too much pride, think about a future for your kids or family without you in it. Too many addicts die every year without getting help. Do not become a statistic for the death rate.
